This is the first of a series of brief reviews on filipino places in
the net. Consider this an SCF guide to what's out there. The focus of
the first few installments is on internet relay chat (IRC). IRC is an
early version of chatrooms. Here, a chat room is known by its more
proper name: a channel. If you need an intro, visit this site
http://www.new2chat.com/

I've been going in and out of several filipino channels in different
networks the past few days trying to get a feel for what's out there
in IRC world. After going to the ones in irc.dal.net and
irc.undernet.org I believe I can make comparisons between the
different channels. The channel we will be focusing on is irc://irc.dal.net/manila

Let's go to business...

I was actually looking forward to reviewing this group for a few
reasons. One is that it is one of the early IRC channels to be set up;
it has been in existence since 1995. The second reason is being called
"#manila" they speak Tagalog mainly. My fondness for this group
doesn't go much further.

I'm afraid to tell you, if #manila in dalnet represents IRC world you
are not missing that much. The conversations here do not go much
deeper than mere greetings of "hi," "hello," "miss kita" and *hugz*.
There's the ubiquitous "hahaha" and "heheheh" and I'm wondering if
they really are laughing at something or they just want to write a
line but couldn't articulate an intelligible word. There's the
occasional let's meet and "sino manlilibre?" It is amazing how these
people can talk for hours without saying anything substantial.

One of the upsides in this group is you will get so many "asl" (age
sex location) request in this channel. If you are looking for a way to
hook up with someone in the Philippines, you probably came to one of
those "right" places. Make sure you ask for pictures (lots of them),
NCEE/SAT scores, GRE/GMAT/LSAT scores if applicable, polygraph test
results, NBI records, three letters of recommendations and bank
statements.

They're a friendly bunch but they're mostly brain-dead.

Rating: :( Stay away for your brain's sake

Next time we'll put the spotlight on one of the undernet.org channels.

*hugz* ppl hahaha.
